Angels Sweep the Desert Floor

By Miriam Chaikin
Rabbis in ancient times believed that the answers to all questions could be found somewhere in the Bible. “Turn it and turn it, for everything is in it,” they said. Each answer the rabbis found became a type of story, a midrash. Miriam Chaikin examines familiar midrashim, or stories from the Old Testament. This collection of eighteen moving and lyrical tales follows Moses and the Israelites as they wander the desert, sate their hunger with manna bread, receive the Ten Commandments, and, ultimately, reach the Holy Land. Glowing paintings capture the majesty of heaven and the grace of angels who watch over the Israelites during their difficult journey. Biblical notes, bibliography.

The Littlest Frog

By Sylvia Rouss
Hot off the press is The Littlest Frog, a rousing new Passover book by Sylvia Rouss and illustrated by Holly Hannon. In The Littlest Frog, Rouss, the well-known author of the Sammy Spider holiday series, raises her whimsical story telling to new heights. In the Passover story told in the Haggadah at the Seder, the ten plagues delivered to Pharoh and the Egyptians to "let my people go", were no laughing matter. But in this rhyming yarn, silly, fun-loving frogs lighten the load and create child-friendly mischief, driving the Pharoh crazy. Emerald green frogs appear to jump off the pages in the bright, joyful illustrations. They smile as they happily leap all over Pharoh and his palace. There are even frogs wearing sun glasses! The book follows the endearing Littlest Frog who observes the sadness of the Jewish slaves working while Pharoh had fun. Children relate to the Littlest Frog's feelings with the repeating refrain "But the Littlest Frog was very afraid. He hid under the bed, and that's where he stayed." Until the Littlest Frog shows the courage of Moses and rises to the occasion - putting the evil Pharoh in his place! Rouss and Hannon have created an upbeat and appealing book to match the spirit of freedom celebrated at Passover. It is a perfect choice for the spring season - but its appeal will attract children beyond Passover.

Description from Jewish Journal

This is a rhyming, rollicking lark that turns the ten plagues of Egypt on their heads. A list of "Unusual Words" before the story begins would have been a great help, along with a pronunciation guide. In this book, Egypt only has to deal with one plague: frogs. Unfortunately, Pharaoh is very nervous around his unwelcome visitors. He is scared silly of them. But one frog, the littlest one, is scared of him, so he hides under Pharaoh's bed. The frogs are "here, there, and everywhere," and while Pharaoh's magicians can make frogs appear as well as Moses can, they can't make them disappear. Moses, who presumably could if he wanted to, doesn't want to, so he won't. So what's a king to do? He begins to sweep the frogs from his palace. He sweeps them from the throne room, from his bathroom, rugs, jars, baskets and bowls. Finally, he sweeps the last frog from the palace. But that littlest frog is staying right where he is safe. And when Pharaoh is tired and crawls into his bed, everything is quiet, and the littlest frog isn't scared anymore. He hops onto Pharaoh and gives a great "CROAK." Pharaoh panics. "Perhaps Moses is right," Pharaoh thinks. "Perhaps the Jews should be free." Now it is Pharaoh who hides under his bed. The story is a bit strained, but the pictures are charming cartoons, and on the whole, the book is fun.

Miriam and Her Brother Moses

By Jean Marzollo
Re-telling of a classic Bible story in which a brave little girl saves her baby brother Moses, by best-selling and prolific children's author Jean Marzollo

When the wicked king Pharaoh decides that all Hebrew baby boys should be drowned, Miriam and her family come up with a plan to save him: they construct a boat and sail him down the river in hopes that kind people might rescue him. The king's daughter finds baby Moses and follows bystander Miriam's suggestion that a Hebrew woman should care for him; inadvertently, Moses is returned to his mother and to Miriam for three years, then raised as the Pharaoh's grandson. Miriam's singing and positive attitude regarding her brother will inspire and delight. The fish characters Marzollo incorporates at the bottom of each page of the book provide additional commentary from a child's perspective for this important, wonderful story.

Description from Publisher

This story is more than a typical Bible picture book. Jean Marzollo created a book in which children will find something new each time they read it (and they will want to read it over and over again)! Miriam works as a slave for the Pharoah in Egypt. When the Pharoah decreed that all Hebrew baby boys were to be killed, Miriam was able to use her beautiful songs to first keep the newborn Moses quiet and later to keep him calm as she followed him in a basket down the Nile. She followed her brother in the basket until it reached the Pharoah's daughter and then Miriam suggested bringing a Hebrew woman (her mother) to give milk to baby Moses. As Moses grew up, Miriam wondered if her brother remembered her ... until she heard him singing the songs that she sang to him so many years earlier. This book features a conversational narrative, comic-book style conversations, poems to be sung to the tune of "Hava Nagilah", and a fish's commentary at the bottom of each page encouraging children to think further about the story. An excellent choice for elementary school readers.

Moses and the Angels

By Ileene Smith Sobel
Introduction by Elie Wiesel
In a collection that shows religion brushed with mystery, Sobel retells the stories of Moses, who is always surrounded by angels, his life washed in magic, miracles, and exaggerations. Derived, according to an introduction by Elie Wiesel, from biblical commentaries, the tales cover familiar ground (Moses's adoption by the pharaoh's daughter, the plagues, the freeing of Israel, and the years in the desert) and more fantastic realms, with tours through the seven heavens, visions of the future, and battles among the angels, who guide and protect Moses at every stage of his life. By turns serious and delightfully eccentric, these unusual renderings of the old stories are matched by Podwal's iconic, vibrant paintings. It's an entertaining volume, surely destined for applications beyond the obvious religious ones.

Moses In The Bulrushes

Baby Moses

(Step into Reading Books Series)

By Linda Hayward
The story of how baby Moses was hidden in a basket of bulrushes and sent floating down the river to protect him from the cruel Pharaoh is retold for beginning readers. The book is physically attractive; there is an appealing and appropriate balance between the illustrations and the text. The full-color watercolor drawings convey a sense of the exotic Egyptian setting. The story is well told within the confines of an extremely limited vocabulary. "Was the baby safe?'' asks the narrator. " `Not yet,' '' answer the snakes, the hippos, and the crocodiles; thus providing a touch of whimsy and humor. The presentation of a Bible story in beginning-to-read format is relatively unique, and this one is sufficiently well done to provide an interesting reading experience.

Moses :
Retold from the Bible

By Leonard Everett Fisher
Fisher's version of the biblical story of Moses and the Exodus from Egypt suggests a great staged pageant, with richly colored paintings in the artist's signature style. Each double-page spread captures a mythic drama, with the Old Testament figures bold against mountain, desert, and sky, from the hiding of the baby in the bulrushes to the coming of the plagues, the parting of the waters, the wandering in the desert, and the receiving of the Ten Commandments. In one powerful close-up, Moses is horrified to see an Egyptian slave-master beating an Israelite. In another scene, G-d shows his power to Moses in the flames of the burning bush. The text is longer than usual for Fisher, and he combines biblical style and God's thundering cadence ("let My people go!" ) with a plain, sometimes colloquial, telling ("I have made a terrible mistake," Pharaoh says). Of course, this is the Passover story, but it's also the story of the oppressed everywhere and their struggle to be "free at last."

Description from Booklist

The story is familiar, but Fisher's ability with words is matched only by his ability to create pictures. When Moses' mother hides him in the bulrushes, the dark scares the reader as much as it does Miriam, who is watching the baby. The Egyptian princess and her ladies are relieved to find an Israelite woman to nurse the foundling Moses. Their relief shows in their faces. Thunder, lightning, the Red Sea parting for the fleeing Israelites-Fisher is fantastic. A good addition to any home or school library and of particular interest to those who have just learned the story and who can relate it to Passover and the Ten Commandments.

Exodus

By Miriam Chaikin
Chaikin's dignified text and Mikolaycak's magnificent bold illustrations make this a treasure for all ages and religions. Exodus relates the stories of Moses, the ten plagues, and the wanderings of the Israelites in the desert until the Ten Commandments are received. The language flows smoothly and is accessible to young readers. The text and the use of white space are masterfully incorporated into the design of each page. Each sweeping double-page spread is framed in a rust earth tone, bringing to mind a desert setting, with the illustrations extending beyond the borders, giving a larger-than-life flow to each scene. Golden highlights predominate in the detailed mosaics and jeweled patterns in the Egyptian scenes and as the flames symbolizing G-d in the desert. Appended is a map of "the probable route of the Exodus" and the names and symbols of the 12 tribes of Israel.

The Shadow of a Flying Bird :
A Legend from the Kurdistani Jews

By Mordicai Gerstein
A moving fable that incorporates the Jewish concept of struggling with G-d.

Moses has lived his allotted time, but he is not yet ready to die, despite G-d's call. Although he eloquently pleads for more time--"Turn me into a tiny butterfly, only let me live". G-d refuses to extend his life, sending the archangels to fetch Moses' soul, but they are too sorrowful to perform the task; only the angel of death takes on the assignment with relish, but Moses smites him. So the Lord Himself descends to Earth to take Moses' soul with a kiss; yet afterward, He experiences almost unbearable sadness. He has lived up to His own rules, but He has lost the human closest to Him. The Chagall-like paintings, featuring cabalistic symbolism and heavenly colors, are full of magic. Younger children probably will not understand either the story or the art in a conventional manner, but they will intuit the themes of love, loss, and humanity's mysterious relationship with G-d. The best audience for this, however, may be older children who will be able to talk about many of the poignant issues the story raises.

Brass Serpent

By Eric A. Kimmel
Why do physicians and hospitals the world over use, as a symbol of the doctor's healing power, a staff with a snake curled around it? Here, for the first time, is the origin of the growing medical belief that man can heal himself.

The Israelites wandering the desert complain to Moses and refuse to listen to G-d. G-d sends a plague of snakes to attack the people. When Moses pleads with G-d to have mercy, He sends Moses a Brass Snake which Moses lifts on his staff. All those who look at the snake are healed; those who refuse to do so, die. The scales of the snake are used for the Temple doors a thousand years later.

Eric Kimmel has written over 35 children's tales, including Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins which won a Caldecott Honor Award. While the author has written many books based on tales of the Far East and Russia, the titles with which he has won awards have invariably been of Jewish interest and reflect his affinity for his roots.

The Prince of Egypt (DVD)

The Prince of Egypt (VHS)
Nearly every biblical film is ambitious, creating pictures to go with some of the most famous and sacred stories in the Western world. DreamWorks' first animated film was the vision of executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, a key architect in the Disney studio's rebirth (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, etc.).

Here is an Egypt alive with energetic bustle and pristine buildings. Born a slave and set adrift in the river, Moses (voiced by Val Kilmer) is raised as the son of Pharaoh Seti (Patrick Stewart) and is a fitting rival for his stepbrother Rameses (Ralph Fiennes). When he learns of his roots--in a knockout sequence in which hieroglyphics come alive--he flees to the desert, where he finds his roots and heeds G-d's calling to free the slaves from Egypt.

Moses Crosses the Red Sea :
A Story of Faith and Courage

(Story from The Prince of Egypt)

By Mary Manz Simon
Courage is the focus. For it is only through courage and faith in G-d that Moses will help the Hebrews escape from Egypt and lead them across the Red Sea.

Description from Publisher

This retelling of the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt is a book version of the animated movie, "The Prince of Egypt." An exceptional animation, the artwork translates well to book form. We are informed that the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt and that Moses was the one chosen by God to deliver the Hebrews out of Egypt. Moses repeatedly requested of Pharaoh that they be allowed to leave, but it took numerous punishments sent by God to convince the Pharaoh to allow this to happen. The staff Moses carried was used on two occasions to perform miracles as the Nile turned to blood and Red Sea is parted, allowing the Hebrews to escape the Pharaoh's soldiers. The book is part of the "Timeless Values" collection, and the study questions following the text explore the concept of courage and how it is relevant in this story.

Description from Children's Literature

We just gave this book to our Grandchildren tonight for Chanukah. As I read it to our Grandchildren they were held wide-eyed in their places. The anticipation of seeing this at the movies is evident in every commercial that flashes across our television. But of all the artistry this book delivers, it is the questions at that back of this book that earns its five stars. Questions on Courage, Moses' and their own. Questions about other Biblical heroes that showed tremendous courage against all odds, which causes them to think beyond the story . A book that causes a child to actually think. A welcomed addition to any home library. It will challenge you , your children and cause you to look a little deeper into your spirit.
